Mackney, October 15, 2023 - Residents of Mackney gathered at the town square on Saturday to support a community initiative aimed at renovating the long-neglected Riverside Park. The event, titled 'Revive Riverside', attracted over 200 participants, including families, local business owners, and community leaders.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Mackney Parks and Recreation Department, aims to raise $50,000 for improvements, including new playground equipment, walking paths, and enhanced landscaping. Mayor Linda Thompson addressed the crowd, expressing her enthusiasm for the community's involvement. 'Riverside Park has always been a vital part of our town's identity. It's where families gather, children play, and memories are made. Together, we can revitalize this space for future generations,' she stated.
Volunteer groups have already begun organizing fundraising activities, including bake sales and community runs. Local businesses have pledged to contribute a percentage of their sales to the renovation fund.
In addition to fundraising efforts, a petition has been launched to secure a grant from the state government, which could significantly increase the project’s budget. Organizers are hopeful that with community support and state backing, the renovations could begin as early as Spring 2024.
Riverside Park, located along the scenic Mackney River, has been a central hub for community events and recreation but has suffered from years of underfunding. Many residents expressed their desire for a revitalized park that can cater to a wider range of activities and age groups.
The next community meeting will be held on October 22 at the Mackney Community Center, where residents can share ideas and provide input on the renovation plans. Organizers encourage anyone interested in contributing to the project to attend and get involved.
