The annual Mackney Bake-Off took place this weekend, and if you thought it was all about cakes and cookies, you clearly haven’t met our local nans. Carolyn Foster, 72, and Claire Pope, 74, teamed up to create a cake that could only be described as a ‘chocolate explosion’—a delightfully chaotic mix of layers that even made the judges giggle. "We just threw everything we had at it! And it worked!" Carolyn chuckled, her eyes twinkling with the joy of her sugary masterpiece. As the competition heated up, it was Henry Williamson, a 71-year-old children’s nurse, who opted for a more classic approach with his vanilla sponge, topped with a lovingly applied layer of buttercream. "I may not have the wildest cake here, but when you work with kids all day, you learn that simplicity wins hearts. Just like me!" he joked. The bake-off was not only a chance for sweet treats but also for the community to gather and enjoy a day filled with laughter and camaraderie. "I just love seeing everyone come together like this. It's like a big family reunion, only with less arguing and more frosting!" added Claire, who was clearly on a sugar high. The event raised funds for local charities, proving that while the cakes were good, the sense of community was even sweeter. With smiles all around, it looks like the nans have taken the title of ‘Best Bakers’ and hearts alike this year. After all, who can resist a bite of love wrapped in chocolate and buttercream?
